Dear Parents and Guardians,
There is nothing I love more than teaching your children. How many people can say that they get a charge each and every day as they go to work? I'm one of the lucky few. I know just how important your kids are to you because they mean a whole lot to me as well. I will periodically update this page with updates on our classroom. I believe that the best classrooms are communities and ones where parents are totally aware of what's happening in the classroom. I'm sure we have all experienced that moment when you ask your kid at the dinner table "What happened at school today?" and you receive a shrug or a "nothing." Well, I'll fill you in on the details!
Things you might need to know:
I often call home to talk about your child. Do not panic when you see my name pop up on Caller ID. I call just as much to praise what amazing things your child does in class as I do to talk about anything I'm concerned about.
My email address is [email protected].
Your child needs to bring a "fun read" to class three times a week (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday). I have them read for the first ten minutes of class. I have a wide variety of books that they may borrow before or after school or before or after class on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I have an electronic checkout system so that I know who borrowed what and on what date. There is no due date for these books, but I ask students to be courteous of "high demand" books. If a student fails to return a book by the end of the semester, the student must either replace the book or reimburse me for the cost of the book. I have paid for each book in my classroom library. This is the policy of all public libraries, so I think it is more than fair.
I do not give out a ton of homework. I know that my students often are bogged down by three other classes. If you ask your child if they have any homework and they say "none," it's probably true! That being said, there will be times when I assign reading to be completed outside the classroom.
I have Book Talks once a month where someone from our school or community comes into the classroom for five to ten minutes during your child's class period to talk about his or her favorite books. If you would like to be one of our featured guests, my kids would love it. I love any opportunity to promote literacy. Contact me by phone or email to set up a time. All you need is to bring a copy of your favorite book and an explanation of why you love it.
I look forward to getting to know each and every one of you.
Sincerely,
Lindsay Theaker
