Read the TIME Magazine article on herd mentality. Then, in the comments section, reflect upon the article by writing a cohesive thesis statement that makes an argument about whether herd mentality is a problem today. Then, respond to two others’ thesis statements. What do you think of their claim? What examples do you have of herd mentality in society?

Young teens are easily influenced by Herd Mentality and they will do outrageous activities just to fit in or seem "cool".

I agree with this statement however I think the article is making a statement on how social hurting is seen as many people in a society positively influence each other, whereas peer pressure is more of a negative influence.

Peer pressure has been given a negative connotation, however it is often used for good. Social herding is very real in our society. We see it everyday with out even thinking about it such as campaigns to stop smoking, and friend groups sitting together in class.

Very true! Social herding can be used in many good ways as people may have a certain opinion, others may follow as they agree and realize they aren't the only one with that opinion.

I feel like peer pressure and herd mentality does more harm then good in our society. Although the efforts to stop smoking are righteous, the smoking 'epidemic' was mostly caused by said peer pressure.

Great minds think alike though fools seldom differ. Herd mentality is a problem in our society today. Groups tend to make poor decisions, because the individuals within the group are too caught up with following everyone else rather than giving their own thought out and considered decisions. Just because "everyone's doing it" doesn't mean you have to. No one is worried about being their own person, they're more worried about fitting in.

I agree with what Shy is saying. People's actions and attitudes tend to build off each other’s. Like if one friend was to say “I really need to stop vaping”, this would start a ripple effect within this friend group to also stop.

Agreed, most teens do things just to say they did it and so the people around them think they are cool. Teens that surround themselves with bad behavior are scared to speak up for what is right because they don’t want their friends to think they are lame.

Heard mentality is a thing that many people in our society are dealing with today. Most of our peers do pressure us to do things that we would not do on our own, which leads teens to do things like drugs or to go out and drink. Sometimes we do the same things we see our peers dong because it may seem cool.

Herd mentality is a common thing amongst teens today. Many teens are oblivious to peer presure but they face it all the time. For instance, a group of friends will want you to do something and you give in so your not "lame" or "uncool". Teens are always trying to find a way to fit in. This herd mentality has messed up society. Even though the pressure can sometimes be towards achieving more in life.

I believe herd mentality is a problem today because you are a reflection of the few people you spend most of your time with. This makes you do certain things because you want to be like your friends or you don't want to be considered lame.

Herd mentality is very common among people and groups of friends. It is an unconscious following people submit themselves into. They try to fit in to feel something inside of them. They may look up to others and want to feel noticed or a cry for attention. People give into peer pressure because there isn't family or friend support that guide them. Peer pressure could sometimes be a good thing. Influencing good around others can help peers become goal orientated or obtain good habits.

Herd mentality is a dangerous prospect that people of all age groups fall into today, although teens are the largest demographic to be affected by the idea. We cant truly think for ourselves anymore and rely on others to make decisions for us, all because we want to fit in. Our personalities, likes and dislikes are based on the people around us and who we interact with, making most people essential carbon copies of each other. Although some forms of herd mentality provide positive outcomes, most do more harm than good.

I agree with the common inability within ourselves to think independently. Peer pressure is more complex than presented in many of these government funded campaigns. Identifying the influences within everything our mind takes in is the first step to truly independent thinking.

Herd mentality is a problem that everyone faces not just teens because as you eat older and start finding who you are you tend to “follow the herd” until you find the thing that sets you apart from everyone else. This is also because people are afraid of trying anything new. Trying new things takes courage while following the crowd gives you a cushion of comfort and predictability.

Social herding is a common behavior exhibited in not only teens, but all people, as it is human nature. Fitting in used to help people survive. However, now it has changed into a behavior that pushes many teens to negative behaviors, such as smoking. Whether we like it our not, our ability to effectively choose "herds" can determine our success in life.

Herd Mentality seems to fit the teenage stereotype because of it's nature when the mindset can take many forms that extend into a lifetime. The want of social comfort isn't something exclusive to people in their teens.

Herd mentality is a natural occurrence which doesn't just affect the human species. But despite any other animal, this trait can lead to negative consequences for humans. Whether its leading people into war or just a simple high school setting where one is desperate to fit in. It can leave a strain on the human psyche. The urge to conform and to also be individual is more difficult to do in the modern age.

i believe herd mentality is definitely a problem in today’s society because mostly everyone just wants to feel accepted. so doing whatever everyone else is doing is seen as “ cool “. But also having social herds could potentially give you good opportunities in life by “ acting “ even though you know that it’s something you normally wouldn’t do. It all depends on the actual character of the person to negative or positive.
