Watch the trailer for The Crucible film. Then read the Rolling Stone review and the EW review of the 1996 film. In the comments section, write a review of the trailer. What did the trailer creators do to attempt to persuade you to go watch this film? Were they effective or not and why? Then, comment on one other person’s review of the trailer. What do you agree or disagree with their perspective of the trailer?
Read the short story “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson. Then, in the comments, write about your reaction to the story’s shocking ending. What is Jackson attempting to highlight or teach us through this story? Look at this tone word list and find an example of a tone in one of the paragraphs of the short story and include this example and your commentary in your comment.
Read the poem “Half-Hanged Mary” by Margaret Atwood and read the suggested annotations within the poem. Take a look at these flashcards. Then, in the comments, write about your reaction to the poem. What was Margaret Atwood attempting to highlight? Finally, respond to one other person’s reactions.
Read the TIME Magazine article on herd mentality. Then, in the comments section, reflect upon the article by writing a cohesive thesis statement that makes an argument about whether herd mentality is a problem today. Then, respond to two others’ thesis statements. What do you think of their claim? What examples do you have of herd mentality in society?
